On October 23rd 2020, President Donald J. Trump brokered yet another peace deal between Israel and a majority Muslim country, this time with Sudan (1). This will be the third peace deal in the region between Israel and a majority Muslim country in just three months, the others being the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain (2).

In the coming few weeks following the peace deal Sudan and Israel will begin negotiations on things such as trade, agriculture, migration issues, and other mutually beneficial topics (3). While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also pointed out, “”The skies of Sudan are now open to Israel, which allows direct and short flights between Israel, Africa and South America,” (4).

The Government and people of Sudan have also entered a transitional phase of government, hoping to leave behind their dictatorship and move into a more democratic type nation. Direct from the Joint Statement of the United States, the Republic of Sudan, and the State of Israel on the White House website, “The Sudanese transitional government has demonstrated its courage and commitment to combating terrorism, building its democratic institutions, and improving its relations with its neighbors. In light of this historic progress, and following President Trump’s decision to remove Sudan from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list, the United States and Israel agreed to partner with Sudan in its new start and ensure that it is fully integrated into the international community.” (5).

With three peace deals between Israel and others in the area in the last three months, and Sudan in a transitional government phase, it is indeed an interesting time with hopes of a more stable and secure region.
