The Nobel Peace prize was created in 1901 by Alfred Nobel in a hope to reward people for achievements which have greatly helped and contributed to human society under a multitude of different fields. These fields can include, chemistry, physics, medicine, literature, and peace (1). President Donald Trump this year has been nominated not once, but twice, for one of these Peace prizes for 2021, but what exactly has earned it for the controversial President?

The first came from Christian Tybring-Gjedde, a Norwegian member of parliament, who nominated President Trump for his peace deal between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Isreal, telling Fox news in an exclusive interview that, “I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other Peace Prize nominees.” (2). Also Addressing in his nomination letter to the Nobel Committee was President Trumps, “key role in facilitating contact between conflicting parties and … creating new dynamics in other protracted conflicts, such as the Kashmir border dispute between India and Pakistan, and the conflict between North and South Korea, as well as dealing with the nuclear capabilities of North Korea.” (3). While finally pointing out in his nomination letter, “Trump has broken a 39-year-old streak of American Presidents either starting a war or bringing the United States into an international armed conflict. The last president to avoid doing so was Peace Prize laureate Jimmy Carter”. (4).

The second nomination comes from Magnus Jacobsson a member of the Riksdag which is the national legislature and the supreme decision making body of Sweden. This nomination is for brokering yet another historic peace deal this time between Serbia and Kosovo (who broke away from Serbia in 2008), hosting both countries leaders in the Oval Office to sign the agreement (5). Jacobsson in a Tweet said that he had nominated the three governments (USA, Kosovo, and Serbia), “for their joint work for peace and economic development, through the cooperation agreement signed in the White House. Trade and communications are important building blocks for peace.” (6).
While these are just nominations, it appears that part of the international community is impressed with some of the things President Trump has worked on when it comes to peace deals and trade agreements. However, we will have to wait until 2021 to see if these go beyond just nominations, and whether or not President Trump will receive a Nobel Peace Prize.
